Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU)

The Interdisciplinary Unit, as part of the MYP (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme) is an exciting and essential part of our Junior curriculum at Glendowie College.  It brings together students from separate classes to share the knowledge and skills they have gained from two subject areas, and to work collaboratively to create and develop a product. Students are marked on their ability to synthesise these two separate knowledge areas, to work collaboratively and diplomatically to overcome challenges, and to craft a meaningful and well-executed product representative of this learning and the new knowledge they have gained during this process.

This year we implemented our first Year 10 IDU as an entire cohort. Students, many of whom had been part of the Year 9 IDU last year, were now tasked with combining their knowledge and learning from Mathematics and Health and Physical Education. In their groups, students were to consider and explore how data could be extracted and analysed through the creation and playing of a game. Students not only had to create their game, but also have their classmates play it in order to collect data for analysis and presentation in a graph. This culminated in a big day on the field where students gathered to teach their games to each other and collect meaningful data.
